Our History
The Griffith Three Ways Reserve was declared in 1954, with families from across NSW,
Victoria and possibly other states living in shanties or tin houses.

In 1964, the Three Ways community hall was built on the Griffith Three Ways Reserve on
the corner of what we now know as ‘Goolagong Street’ & ‘Kennedy Street’.
This hall later became the preschool kindergarten with support from the ‘Save the
Children Fund’.

The preschool was officially opened by Mrs Mackay, NSW President of the Fund in
November 1964, however classes had commenced on the 20th of October 1964.
Upon opening, the students were a mix of both Aboriginal and Non-Aboriginal kids.

In the late 1960’s, the hall was burned down. Between that time and 1972, it has been
reported by local Elders that the preschool had moved to temporary locations such as
the Griffith Girl Guides Hall & Jenny and John Hewitt’s house.
In 1972, the Save the Children Fund Preschool is opened in Blumer Avenue, Griffith.

This is where the Griffith Wiradjuri Aboriginal Preschool still stands today, 52 years later.
